When our senses warn us

Nature has deliberately equipped us with good sensory organs, so that we can intuitively smell and taste dangers. This natural protection prevents us from poisoning ourselves. Over time we learned to tell good water from bad, because it was vital for survival. Today this reflex has remained. If the drink doesn't taste good to us, we wrinkle our nose and want just one thing – definitely not to keep drinking.

Descaling systems

As already mentioned, descaling systems can change the taste of drinking water for the worse. In order to filter out the scale-forming ions (magnesium in the form of Mg2+ and calcium in the form of Ca2+), an ion exchange resin is usually used. This consists of a modified plastic. The plastic was previously loaded with other ions (e.g. H+ or Na+). In the ion exchange with the scale-forming ions, these are then gradually released. The plastic likewise releases chemicals and can thus change the taste of the water for the worse.

Chlorination

A rather rare phenomenon in Germany is the chlorination of drinking water. This is usually only carried out in emergencies, when e.g. a heavy thunderstorm has temporarily contaminated the drinking water supply. Nevertheless, most of us have already experienced such a chlorination. Associated with it are also the resulting by-products, which likewise usually alter the taste. These can be flushed out for a while after the emergency chlorination.
